A Tale of The Tortoise and The Hare

Once upon a time, in the peaceful woods, there were some animals who lived there. A monkey who can hang on the trees, a bear who can swim well on the river, a hare who can run really fast, and a tortoise.

The hare was always mocking the tortoise because of his slow walks. He always repeatedly said that he was the fastest animal alive. The other animals also got annoyed by the hare's words.

"Did you ever get anywhere?" asked the hare with a mocking face.

"Yes, I do walk for it." the tortoise replied.

"Hahaha." The hare was dying laughing.

"Let's have a race." asked the tortoise and made everyone amused.

"You? Take a race with me? You're joking, right?" The hare was laughing nonstop.

"Okay, let's have a race. Here's the start and the finish line is at the Bear's house near the river."

The hare and the tortoise prepared to take a start. The bear was counting down and the moment when the counting down was over, the hare ran quickly; left the tortoise on the start line.

The hare was so far from the tortoise, he was gradually slowing down his steps and stopped under a tree and slept there. Not long after that, the tortoise was passing the hare. He saw that the hare was sleeping so he sped up his step. The tortoise was so near the bear's house which is the finish line. Other animals were cheering up the tortoise and woken up the hare. The hare was surprised that the tortoise was close to the finish line and he started to run. Unfortunately, the hare couldn't catch the tortoise up. The tortoise has finished and won the race. The end.

HELLO, bored people! Have you ever read or heard this story? Maybe some of you have already read or heard about the story of the tortoise and the hare since it's a well-known story. I also have heard it from a children-animation show, it comes with so many good moral values. My friends- and maybe some of you- thought that there were no people like the hare or like the tortoise. Some of them said that the tortoise was lucky, some of them said that the hare was on bad luck. It's fine if you have that kind of thoughts, I low-key agree too. But, in so many cases, there are people who like the hare or the tortoise in real life.

Yesterday, I scrolled through my Twitter timeline and saw a video (here) from the climbing Olympics in the Tokyo Olympic 2021. There were two climbers, Iuliia Kaplina from Russia and Shauna Coxsey from the United Kingdom. Iuliia Kaplina climbed so fast, it only took 7.65 seconds to reach the top but unfortunately, she slipped and fell. I didn't want to compare Iuliia with the hare; I know she didn't belittle Shauna since it was the Olympics. Otherwise, I feel sad about Iuliia because she must be so disappointed. But, Iuliia, just in case you read this, you did great. You're so fast and amazing. I just want to highlight that even if you're fast, it doesn't guarantee you to win. If you're going fast, you have to be extra careful of your steps; don't slip.

Maybe we have the same experience with Iuliia. We are running as fast as we can, seeing it as the only way to win. We want to learn things as early as possible, to win the race in life. We might compare our lives to others. "He is 14, but he won a gold medal in the Olympics", "She was 14 when she debuted with a popular girl group" and asking ourselves "what did I do in my 14's?". We want to run and catch them up. But, don't. Life isn't a race nor competition.

When I was 17, one of my friends already had a business. I was thinking she was starting, so I also had to. I decided to start a business; selling books and novels. Unluckily, mine failed. I couldn't sell even a book in a week. I finally gave up and thought that I wasn't prepared enough to start a business. Then in the final year of school, I realized that I should've not compared my life with people's. People go to the moon in their 16's, people have a million dollars in their 17's, people have a successful business in their 15's. Sometimes, some of my friends and I also got triggered every time young people do so many experiences at once. We can stop them to share (or showing off) their achievement because maybe that is their happiness. It's us, who have to build our minds up, to not be triggered by them. For me, yeah, that's good for them, but I don't have to compare it with myself. I think I can enjoy my life's journey in my own way. To be honest, that's not the best way to live, but since I'm the one who is living for it, I do believe it's the best for me. I know the consequences and I'm responsible for it.

In my opinion, you don't have to be fast, do it slowly and enjoy your journey. A 14 years old athlete may get a gold medal in the Olympics, but he lost his youth to exercise. You might learn things faster, get things earlier, or have more than others. But, are you ready to lose something in trade and let it be foregone? The answer and the risk are on you.

Okay, maybe that's all from me. I know this article won't be worth even a buck compared to your time spent reading this. That's why I'd be very grateful if you could leave feedback and thoughts about my article. That would be so great if we can share what we think about this case. But, nevertheless, thank you for reading my words. The world is still caught up in pandemics so wear your mask, wash your hands, and get your vaccine as soon as possible. Okay, see you next time. Bye~

BEOM
