Till We Meet Again (2021): Good But Lack of Backstories

HELLO bored people, how are you doing? I hope you all are doing fine. Although the pandemic is almost over, I hope you all keep wearing masks and wash your hands frequently until the government officially announces that the pandemic is over. Be healthy and stay hydrated! I know, it has been a long time since I write an article on this blog. Well, I have reasons (which are not important so I will not explain lol). Mostly I am just busy with college assignments that I feel endlessly coming every day. Yeah, that is a consequence of being a student (why am I doing this...)

Till We Meet Again (2021)

Anyway, roughly two months ago, I scrolled an online ticket app for cinema, I was looking for a fun movie to be watched on the weekend. I felt tired of my assignments and needed to take a break. At first, I was shocked that a movie--called Till We Meet Again is still available on the schedule. I was more shocked to know that tomorrow is the last day I was able to watch this movie. I was confused, on one side that I really wanted to watch this movie but another side I have to go part-time. I was asking everyone in my contacts to get a clear decision on which one should I take, whether to watch the movie or not. Then I got a middle road between both choices.

Basically, I finally decided to watch the movie after I am done with my part-time job, thankfully it still has an afternoon schedule (it was at 2.30 PM). What did make me want to watch the movie so bad was because the review from CineCribe that said it was a good movie because it feels like watching three movies at once (Our Times, You Are the Apple of My Eyes, and Along with Gods).'Till We Meet Again or 月老' (2021) tells a story about Xiao Lun (Kai Ko, You Are the Apple of My Eyes) who accidentally got struck by a flash of lightning while playing basketball. That makes him lose his memories. He was taken by guardians to the afterlife to decide what kind of reincarnation he will be by the number of white balls on his bracelet. Before that, he has a chance to work as a 'cupid' to make people fall in love by connecting a red string. The job can turn the dark balls on his bracelet into white. He is working with his partner, Pinky (Gingle Wang) to make people fall in love and success to turn a black ball into a white ball. While doing his job, Xiao Lun meets someone in his life who will bring back his memories alive. She is Jing Qing (Vivian Sung, Our Times), a girl that Xiao Lun likes. Xiao Lun wants to connect a red string of Jing Qing with other men,  but the string is always cut off automatically. His partner, Pinky, tries so hard to connect the string but she is always failed until Xiao Lun realizes that Jing Qing is actually able to see him.

Xiao Lun and Jing Qing

What I like about the movie is the cinematography and the storyline that is so interesting to be followed. It is fun yet sad to watch every scene in the movie. I also like the fact that they bring a belief in reincarnation in a fun way but still understandable. The comedy in this movie is also quite hilarious, honestly, I laugh at all jokes in this movie. I also like the build-up of emotion between Xiao Lun and Jing Qing when they first met after Xiao Lun dies. After we get the information that Jing Qing is able to see Xiao Lun, every scene, in the beginning, becomes makes sense. The reason why Jing Qing can see Xiao Lun somehow also makes sense even though we never get a narration because the scene explains it so well. I cannot doubt the acting skill of Kai Ko since he played so well in You Are the Apple of My Eyes (I like that movie so badddd). The same goes for Vivian Sung, ever since I watched Our Time, I know that her acting skill will be amazing in this movie.

But, to be honest, I feel a little disappointed with the plot. I really deplore that the writers have to put an evil character into the movie. It just destroys the story that has been built up in the beginning. Consequently, an important character, Pinky, has to lose her backstories. For a person who is shown on the poster, the story of Pinky is making me sad. She barely has any backstories, and when she gets one, it gets forgotten right away. I, as a viewer, am still clueless, still asking "who is this girl?". I think it is better to put the evil character aside and tells more about Pinky. I also think that the backstory of the evil character is not really correlated with the beginning story. Send prayers to Pinky's backstories yall.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this movie, the feel of watching the movie in the cinema was really fun, I did not regret it even though it is really tiring to go after working LOL. But other than that, I really enjoy my break time which is not on the weekend. If you missed the movie in the cinema, you are able to watch this movie on the Disney+ channel. I think that is all for my review of Till We Meet Again (2021). I hope I can write frequently on this blog since I will watch two movies this month (Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and KKN Di Desa Penari). Thanks for reading and as usual, I am open to discussion and critics. See you anytime soon!
